Frequently Asked Questions

Most of the information given here can be found in the Postdoctoral Scholar’s Handbook.

What is a postdoctoral scholar?

Postdoctoral scholars and senior postdoctoral scholars are considered to be temporary interim employees. Postdocs and senior postdocs always work under close supervision of one or more Caltech professorial faculty members. Postdocs and senior postdocs are a separate group, distinct from faculty, staff, and students.

How long is a postdoc appointment?

Appointments are normally made in increments of one year; however, multi-year appointments are optional. The rank of a postdoc can be renewed to a maximum of six years.

What is a senior postdoctoral scholar?

Postdocs who have held this rank for a minimum of one year may be promoted to the rank of senior postdoctoral scholar. Time served in the ranks of postdoc and senior postdoc cannot exceed the maximum of six years. Persons who have held a postdoctoral position at another institution may be appointed directly to the senior postdoctoral scholar rank.

How can I apply for a postdoctoral position at Caltech?

Visit the academic division web sites by clicking “Academic Divisions” on the Caltech main page for more information regarding your particular area of science or visit Caltech’s Employment listings.

What is a senior research fellow?

Postdocs and senior postdocs may be promoted to senior research fellow. Promotion from either position requires a divisional committee review that includes three external letters of reference and approval by the IACC (Institute Academic Council).

What is the current minimum salary for postdocs, senior postdocs and visitors?

Minimum salary guidelines are reviewed and determined each year by the Provost with the concurrence of the IACC. Contact your division office or the Postdoctoral Scholars/Visitors Services for current guidelines concerning minimum salary.

When will I be paid?

Postdocs who are paid by a salary are paid at the end of the month. Postdocs who are receiving a stipend from a fellowship are paid at the beginning of the month. You may get two separate checks if you are receiving both a stipend and a supplemental salary.

What is a Caltech visitor?

A visitor must have an established position or relationship with another academic or research institution or organization. A visitor must be nominated by an active faculty member who is a colleague and is responsible for making his or her stay at Caltech mutually beneficial.

How long is a visitor appointment?

Visitors are appointed for terms of no more than one year, and may be reappointed for a total of up to three years. Exceptions may be granted with the approval of the faculty sponsor and division chair.
