The research will involve the research will involve developing new remote sensing and modeling techniques to characterize snow distribution in mountainous regions. In addition the applicant will participate in collaboration between researchers at UCLA and at NASA/JPL. Successful applicants will work with the PI’s (Dr. Noah Molotch and Dr. Steven Margulis), colleagues, and other recent hires to develop integrated observing and modeling systems in the Sierra Nevada mountains and across Earth’s cryosphere. Opportunities to participate in field-based research exist through a variety of NSF initiatives and through NASA JPL’s Ground-based Observing Laboratory for the study of snow, Ice And Terrestrial Hydrology (GOLIATH). Both UCLA and JPL have active research groups in surface water and snow hydrology, and there will be opportunities for active involvement with these groups. Candidates may work jointly at UCLA/JPL or exclusively at either institution. Dr. Dr. Noah Molotch, in JPL’s Water and Carbon Cycles Group will serve as JPL postdoctoral advisor to the selected candidate. The appointee will be guided by the JPL advisor to ensure that the research work will result in publications in the open literature.
