Plan
in Advance
Please
check with the International Offices in
advance of international travel.
Our office will review and ensure that you have the
necessary U.S. immigration documents in order to travel.
You will need a valid visa stamp in your passport to
return to the U.S. in the appropriate status.
Visa
applications are now subject to a greater degree of scrutiny
than in the past at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.
Applicants affected by procedures are informed of the
need for additional screening at the time they submit their
applications and are being advised to expect delays. The time
needed for adjudication of individual cases will continue to
be difficult to predict. We recommend that individuals build
in ample time before their planned travel date when seeking to
obtain a visa.
Please
contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you plan to obtain
a visa stamp before you travel to confirm hours of operation,
application procedures, for any recent changes of procedures
or for further information.

Passports
You
will need a valid passport to enter the U.S.
In most cases, your passport should be valid for six
months beyond your anticipated stay.
Canadians now require a passport to enter the U.S. This is a change. Canadians continue to be exempt from visa acquisition.
Landed
immigrants in Canada do require a passport. In the case of
landed immigrants who are (a) British subjects, (b) citizens
of a Commonwealth country or (c) citizens of Ireland, a visa
is not required. Simply take your passport and proof of Landed
Immigrant Status, and proceed to the Port of Entry. Other
landed immigrants in Canada require a visa.

Valid
United States Visa
You
will need the appropriate valid visa in your passport when you enter the U.S.
Please go to the U.S. Department of State web site about visa acquisition.
You
should apply for a visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate if you
have recently completed a change of status in the U.S. through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Note
about Visa acquisition:
It is important to note that developments in the
U.S. and elsewhere can result in changes from day to
day. We recommend that you apply for a visa well in
advance of your proposed date of entry into the U.S.
to allow sufficient time for the application to be processed.
Final travel plans or the
purchase of non-refundable tickets should not be made until a
visa has been issued and you are in receipt of the passport.

Travel
to Canada and Mexico
The
International Scholar Services (ISS) office recommends that you make
an appointment with your Immigration Advisor before planning
to travel to Canada or Mexico to obtain a
visa.
Changes implemented in the last year have impacted this
process and can cause delays or problems returning to the
U.S..
We recommend applying
for a visa in your home country if at all possible.
