Lawful Permanent Residency (Green Card)

People can get green cards in a variety of ways.  Some involve family-filed petitions, others involve employer-filed petitions, and others involve public policy kinds of applications (asylum, etc.). Caltech sponsorship is only available when the application is based on one’s professional employment at Caltech.  The following are characteristics of Caltech-based petitions:

Appropriate for long-term hires, particularly tenure-track hires

Processing takes at least three years, so it is necessary to bring the individual into the United States in an appropriate non-immigrant status in the interim (usually H-1B or O-1)

Requires an Institute petition to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and to the Department of Labor in some cases

Requires extensive documentation

Must articulate with Institute hiring policies for long-term and/or tenure-track hires, particularly search procedures

Family members get green cards when the sponsored individual gets his or her green card.  This is not the same as a family-filed petition.

Caltech Guidelines for Sponsoring Lawful Permanent Residency
Caltech has developed more detailed guidelines for sponsoring lawful permanent residency.
