Conference size is LIMITED, please register early!
This is a high energy, fast-paced day created specifically for Caltech supervisors. The conference will cover current laws & regulations, tips for encouraging employee excellence, and tools for supervising at Caltech. The day will feature a keynote address, breakout sessions including live demonstrations, a small exhibit hall, new class preview and PRIZE DRAWINGS!

Hear from a Traditional, a Boomer, an X’er, and a Gen Y on how to work effectively in a multi-generational organization. Gain increased understanding about how to manage employee interactions and communications. Walk away with skills, tools, tips and a sense of humor about this new generational workplace. - Session A2: Deviating from the Standard: Creating a Culture of Flexibility

Join us at The Flex Lounge for mock-tails, music and alternative work schedules. This session will focus on helping you stretch your thinking and create a culture of flexibility. We will explore alternative work options that allow you to increase employee engagement and commitment while decreasing employee turnover. - Session A3: Don’t Forget to Carry the One: Legal Updates on Disability Issues and the Interactive Process

There have been a number of changes to laws relating to applicants and employees with disabilities, including some that affect the way organizations manage accommodations. Join us in exploring current issues, including recent ADA changes and California's unique rules. Learn how to use the interactive process when considering accommodations for employees, including transitioning back to work when employees return from a medical leave. - Session A4: The Leadership Feud
AM & PM Sessions Available
Where contestants test their leadership skills and leaders test if they are good contestants. Test your Caltech leadership knowledge during a fun and interactive session setup in the tradition of “The Family Feud”. Family teams will work together to answer questions related employment law, Caltech policies and practices as well as modern leadership concepts!

Increasing your leadership quotient by exploring interactive leadership concepts, styles and practices. Learn to boost employee engagement, trust and team work. We will provide tools to assess your own leadership style and effectiveness that will help you enhance your team’s productivity. - Session B2: Finding a Common Denominator: Examining Caltech’s Sustainability Project
This presentation will focus on the various projects that have recently been completed or are being completed to promote sustainability on campus. It will also touch on ways individuals can help reduce Caltech’s environmental footprint. This is intended to be an interactive session with plenty of time for feedback and questions about the environmental issues facing Caltech.
- Session B3: Maintaining a Balanced and Fair Workforce
Knowing when to hire temporary, occasional or regular employee. This session will also discuss how to hire independent contract employees and what questions should you ask yourself before you create a job requisition. - Session B4: The Cost of Leadership at Caltech
Understanding the funds that make Caltech a research powerhouse; from endowment spending and our investment philosophy, to federal funding and how we stack up against our peer institutions.

Avoid going directly to jail and not passing go by learning how to separate facts from myth and steer clear of payroll pitfalls. This session will emphasize managers legal and ethical obligations to reporting employee’s time. - Session D3: The Cost of Clutter
Why it is important to follow a business records retention plan and keep your files de-cluttered, accurate and timely. The session will focus on how and why Caltech recently developed a major records retention process for the Institute. Questions about how long to keep various types of records and what should be kept in employee files will be addressed during this session. - Session D4: Supervisors’ Self Care to the 4th Power
Spend a session at the supervisors’ spa and receive info and tips on how to reduce stress, gain power and strength to be the best supervisor you can be. Session features supervisor survival kits, desk exercise demonstrations, solutions for managing your workload and a relaxation exercise.

Conference Fee
Registration is $125/person. There is a group discount rate of $100/person if you have 3 or more people registering from your group. The cost of the conference includes all meals and educational materials.
Cancellation Policy
Due to the limited class size and the subsidy provided by Staff Education and Career Development, your PTA will be charged $150 if you cancel your registration without at least 72-hour advanced notice prior to the start of the conference.
