A leave of absence is time away from
work that consists of ten (10) workdays or more, with
the exception of approved vacation.
All leaves of absence should be
applied for at least 30 days in advance if possible
with the Disability and Leave Administration Unit.
Employees are required to submit a completed Leave of
Absence Request Form (Form P21) or a Personal Leave of absence Request form (Form P21-A) or Form when
requesting a leave of absence.

California Family Rights Act

Eligible employees
may take a leave of absence under FMLA/CFRA for the
following reasons:
1. Birth and care of the
eligible employee's child, or placement for adoption
or foster care of a child with the employee (bonding
leave.)
2. Care of an immediate family member who
has a serious health condition.
3. The employee's
own serious health condition.

4. Qualifying exigency leave.
5. Military caregiver leave.
Disability Leave
Employees eligible to use Disability
Leave are either not eligible for,
or have exhausted either Pregnancy
Leave or Family Care & Medical Leave/California
Family Rights Act. Please refer to PM 26 for
details.
Pregnancy
Leave
In accordance with the California
Pregnancy Disability Leave Act, the Institute
provides up to four (4) months of leave to female
employees who are temporarily disabled due to a
pregnancy-related condition. Please refer to PM 26 for
details.
Personal
Leave
It is the policy of the Institute to
permit employees to request Personal Leave of
absence for special circumstances such as education,
public services, and personal emergencies. Please
refer to PM 25 for
details.
Military
Leave
The Institute strongly supports
employees who perform military service and complies with the Uniformed Services
Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) and
other applicable laws and regulation. Please refer
to PM
15-7 for details.
